Happy Holidays!

This week we are finishing up the dancing unit with a skill review test and a written test on Friday. Students in sixth and seventh grade will perform three square dances and will be assessed on how well they can follow cues from the music. All of the students have been doing an excellent job in class so I am expecting they will all do a great job on the tests.

The eighth grade students will take their written test on ballroom dance tomorrow during class. After 8th period tomorrow, students will be escorted down to the gym where the actual ballroom dance will take place. Today in class we reviewed all of the dances that will be performed and everyone looked wonderful. It should be a great time for everyone involved!

When we return from our winter break we will begin our rollerblading unit and then hopefully still have enough snow for cross country skiing.

I would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy holiday season and we will see you back in 2008!

Dance, Dance, Dance!

All three grade levels are currently in the dance unit. The eighth graders are doing an outstanding job in their ballroom dance classes! I can't wait to see them all show off their new dances at the ballroom dance on Friday the 21st.

Sixth and seventh graders started square dancing this week. Students seem to be picking up most of the steps quickly and we are moving right along with new steps. Today the sixth grade students learned a line dance called the Virginia Reel. It was a challenge at first but by the end of class almost everyone had the basic reel line down. We will continue to focus on dance until our holiday break on the 21st.

Congrats to the girls JV Basketball team who finished out their season last night against Gower. Nice work this season!

Go Packers (NFC North Division Champs)! They are 11-2 after beating Oakland last week 38-7! They play St. Louis this week. Go PACK GO!

Stay Warm!!!

The eighth grade class started ballroom dance this week with Mrs. Garvey doing an excellent job introducing some framework steps to the students. So far, everyone has kept right up with the pace of all of the dances and seem to be enjoying every minute of it. This unit will take place for two more weeks and then we will finish up with the ballroom dance on December 21st.

Sixth and seventh grade students will start line dance and square dance next week. We are finishing up volleyball and bowling this week while continuing our fitness days with running and step aerobics.

Open Gym Night is this Friday, the 7th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Students can come and have some fun with their friends and families all while staying active. I hope to see many of you there! Stay warm and drive safe in this snow!

Bowling Trips and Dance Units

This week the seventh and eighth grade students went on their bowling field trips. Many of the students were able to apply the skills they learned over the past few weeks in class to help improve their scores when they stepped onto the lanes. Nice job to everyone who participated!

Next week we will be starting the ballroom dance unit for our 8th graders. This will be a three week unit that will teach students multiple dance steps and techniques that they can show off at the dance. Sixth grade will be starting square dancing at the end of next week and seventh grade will start line dancing.

Congratulations to the girls JV Basketball team who defeated Burr Ridge on Monday. Excellent teamwork and defense girls!

On a side note.......the Green Bay Packers are 10-1! They play Dallas tomorrow at 7:15pm in what may be a future NFC Championship game matchup. Go PACKERS!!!

Just a reminder.....if you didn't sign your child's permission slip for bowling, make sure you ask them for it. They are also posted online at the Lakeview website, under Physical Education.

November is here!

This week we started our volleyball and bowling units. Students were introduced to the units and given a study guide with all of the important information that they need to know before we start playing. The bowling FIELD TRIP will be at the end of November. Eighth grade students will go on November 28th and the seventh grade will go on November 29th.

Basketball tryouts were held last week and we now have our JV and Varsity basketball teams. I will be coaching girls intramural basketball this season and really hope to develop some of the necessary skills that will benefit everyone going into next year's season. We will have practice from 3-5pm everyday there is a home basketball game. The girls will be receiving a schedule by the end of this week.

How about those Green Bay Packers????!!!!! In a VERY exciting overtime game on Monday Night Football, Brett Favre yet again proved he is one of the best ever! On the very first play of the overtime period he threw an 82-yard bomb to Greg Jennings for the victory. Amazing!!! The Packers are now 6-1 going into Sunday at Kansas City.

Fitness and Football

We are well underway with our regular routine of fitness days in P.E. For sixth grade students, three days of the week are designated for a fitness warm-up. Seventh and eighth grade students participate in fitness two days a week. The sixth grade students have been doing an excellent job becoming more familiar with using their heart rate watches for the 10 minute run each week. The goal is for students to stay within the designated heart rate range of 150 to 190 for the full ten minutes.

Flag football has been going on for the previous two weeks for 7th and 8th grade students. The girls have been doing a wonderful job and I have been very impressed with the level of plays that each team focuses on during our class time.

Lastly, the JV Volleyball team concluded the season yesterday with a great win over Eisenhower in two games! Our overall record was 7-3. Excellent job this season ladies!

Volleyball Season

We only have two games left in our short 10-game volleyball season. Today we are away at Gower and next Tuesday, October 16th we play at home against Eisenhower. The girls have done an excellent job this season and hopefully we will be able to end our season on a winning note. Every single girl on the team improved their serving, passing and hitting skills and I am very impressed with how many developed positive leadership skills on and off the court. Nice job ladies and thanks for a great season!!

On another topic, the Chicago Bears beat my favorite team this weekend. It was a tough loss to take and I am hoping that when the Packers face the Bears in December it will be the Packers recovering all of those fumbles! Go Packers!

Welcome to October!

The school year has been flying by so far! As we move into October the 7th and 8th grade boys and girls will be starting their flag football units. For this unit the boys and girls play on separate teams with a focus on skill work and game play in each class. In 6th grade we are still working in our same fitness classes but then we switch over for our activity units. All of the sixth grade students received their heart rate straps and have all started practicing using their monitors.

The JV Volleyball team won last night against Cass. So far our record is 5-3! We have two more games in our 10 game season. Our last away game is next Wednesday, October 10th at Gower and then our final game is at home on Tuesday, October 16th against Eisenhower. Excellent work this season girls!

GO PACKERS!!! They take on the Bears this Sunday night at 7:15pm.

Golf Week!

This week the 7th and 8th grade students started the golf unit. This Thursday all 7th graders will take a field trip to the driving range and practice their driving and chipping skills for their class period. On Friday, 8th graders will have the opportunity to either play mini golf, practice at the driving range or golf on the actual course while we are on our field trip.

The girls JV Volleyball team beat Jefferson in three games on Monday. This Thursdsay is our next home game against Westview. Come out and show your support!

How about those GREEN BAY PACKERS?! They are off to a 3-0 start (the first time since 2001)! And........Brett Favre passed for his 420th touchdown! He now needs only one more TD pass to break Dan Marino's record for the all time touchdown mark.

Fitness Testing

In P.E. this past week we started fitness testing at all three levels. Students are scored in the following categories: shuttle run, sit-ups, sit and reach, pull ups and the mile run. We will complete the mile run during the middle of next week. All students have been doing an excellent job at giving a lot of effort to improve their scores.

The JV Volleyball team had a successful win over Burr Ridge on Wednesday and have been working very hard in practice. The next game is Monday, away at Lisle. Hope to see you there!

Have a nice weekend!

New units and activities!

After a very successful first week of introductions in P.E. we will be starting our units for the first trimester. The sixth graders will be focusing on: field hockey, flag football and track and field in the next month. Each student will have the chance to also participate in step aerobics, jump roping and 10 minute distance runs. The heart rate monitors have been introduced to our sixth graders and we will begin practicing with them starting this week.

Seventh and eighth grade classes will be completing the track and field unit over the next few weeks, while also completing a 15 minute fitness run every week. The goal for each student is to try and stay in his/her target heart rate zone for the full 15 minutes.

I am looking forward to a very exciting first trimester and hoping that every student learns something new about Physical Education and staying healthy outside of class!
