Square Dancing...

The sixth grade students had three full days of square dancing this past week and will continue through Thursday of next week. On Thursday, all of the students will take part in a skills test. This will measure not only ones knowledge of square dancing and the different figures, but also how well each student listens and works with one another. Ask your student to demonstrate some of the moves with you at home.

Examples: Do-Sa-Do, Right Arm Swing, Left Arm Swing, Allemande Left, Allemande Right and Promenade

Congratulations to the 8th grade class on continuing their outstanding BALLROOM DANCING skills with Mrs. Garvey this week! Remember, next Friday (12.18) is our actual Ballroom Dance. Every student in 8th grade will be participating in this. Girls, as a reminder, if you are planning on wearing high heels to the dance, DO NOT wear them all day at school. Your feet will be very tired by the time 1:00pm comes around.

Good luck to the Varsity Girls Basketball team as they travel to MVCC this weekend to play in a pre-season tournament. Next week, the JV Girls have three games to wrap up their season: Monday, home against Jefferson**Tuesday, home against Cass**Thursday, away against Old Quarry. GO SPARTANS!

New units....

This week we started our new units for all three grade levels. In 7th and 8th grade P.E. classes we began volleyball and bowling. Our 6th graders started volleyball, bowling and strength training.

In volleyball, we will be working on the basics of passing, setting and serving to begin. Next week, we will start practicing our appoaches for attacking the ball at the net and rotation in a game. We will begin playing volleyball games during the middle of next week.

Congratulations to all of the Fall athletes on amazing seasons! We had our Fall Sports Banquet last night and all of the students did a great job. It was so nice to be able to recognize all of the hard work that each individual put in during their season.

Up next, boys and girls JV and Varsity Basketball as well as JV/Varsity Cheerleading. The first JV Basketball game for both boys and girls is next Thursday 11/12. The boys will travel to Gower, while the girls will host Gower here at Lakeview. GO SPARTANS!!!

Varsity Volleyball...

Congratulations to the Varsity volleyball team on their 3rd place finish in the Conference Tournament this past Saturday. The LV girls came out firing in their first match against Butler with a whole new intensity level (STANFORD!). LV defeated Butler in 3 games, advancing in the tournament to take on Eisenhower. LV lost their first game, but then battled back and won big in the 2nd game. In the third game, LV gave their best effort but Eisenhower was just too strong and moved onto the championship game.

I want to thank all of the Varsity girls for their dedication and team spirit this season. Good luck to all of those 8th graders that finished out their volleyball career here at Lakeview. I know you will be outstanding if you play in high school.

This week in P.E. class we will be going outside for Flag Football if the rain holds off.....c'mon sun!

Have a great week and weekend!

Spartan Volleyball...

CONGRATULATIONS to the JV Volleyball team on their amazing season! The JV team finished up their season on Wednesday with a victory over Gower. That win put their overall season record at 9-1! The team played so well together at every game and everyone involved should be very proud of an impressive season.

The Varsity Volleyball team finished out their regular season on Wednesday with a victory over Gower as well. Even though the team was short handed and missing four players, the girls still pulled together as a team and won in two games! The overall record for Varsity is 6-4, which will put the girls in the A Bracket for our Conference Tournament on Saturday, October 24th. Go Spartans!

In P.E. class this week, each grade level has been doing fitness and then indoor activities. We are hoping that next Monday and Tuesday the weather will be warm and dry enough to go outside and we will finally play an actual Flag Football game. Please be prepared with appropriate clothing.

October Weather???

This has been a rainy and cold week.....not a very good start to our flag football unit. All of the classes have been inside for the past few days working on indoor football skills. We completed passing drills, snaps, handoffs and punting. I'm hoping that next week the weather will cooperate and it starts to dry up out there. We will be going outside if it is not raining, so please be prepared with your sweatshirts and sweatpants.

The sixth grade classes are still in the middle of their units as well. We will probably finish up at the end of next week and then switch into our final units for these first three activities. Sixth grade students should also have cold weather clothing because their units can all be played outside.

The JV Volleyball team is currently 8-1, while Varsity is 5-4. Both teams have one game left in the regular season, next Wednesday, October 14th at home against Gower. Varsity will then be participating in their Conference Tournament on Saturday, October 24th @ Lakeview. Times and standings still to be announced.

Have a great, long Columbus Day weekend!

Fitness Testing...

This week 7th and 8th grade classes finished up their track/field units along with golf, by taking their cognitive tests for each unit. Most everyone did an excellent job on their tests. Remember, all of the study guides are available online to review for our tests.

This week we also finished up fitness testing with all three grade levels. Your child should be bringing home their fitness sheet to show you their scores. Each student will receive 10 points if they turn in their signed fitness sheet.

Next week, we will be starting our flag football units. The boys and girls classes will be separate for this unit. We will begin by learning and reviewing the basics of passing, catching, snapping and punting. Next we will move into position responsibility and game play.

Congratulations to the JV Volleyball team on their victory last night over Westview. The Varsity team put up a great battle, but ended up losing the match in 3 games. The JV record is 5-1, while Varsity is 4-2. Keep up the great work ladies!

Golf Unit....

This week in P.E. class, the 7th and 8th grade students started their golf unit. On Monday, we worked on our stance and grip using irons. Today we are concentrating on the short game and practicing our putting skills. Everyone has been doing a great job so far and I'm looking forward to the field trips that conclude the unit.

On Thursday, the 7th grade students will travel to Zigfield Troy Golf Course and practice at the driving range. This will only take place during your P.E. period. Each student usually has enough time to hit one bucket of golf balls.

On Friday, the 8th grade class will travel to Zigfield Troy and spend about three hours at the course. Those students who play golf outside of school and who are mature enough to take on the course will be grouped into foursomes and will play the 9-hole course. All other 8th graders will split their time between the driving range and the mini golf course.

CONGRATULATIONS to both the Varsity and Junior Varsity volleyball teams on their victory last night over Lisle! Both teams have been playing great ball with outstanding teamwork. Our next game will be on Thursday, 9/24 @ Butler. The next home game is on Monday next week against Jefferson. Come on out and show your support! Go Spartans!!!

P.E. and Volleyball.....

This week in P.E. classes we are continuing our track and field units for the 7th and 8th grade students. Today in class (Wednesday, 9/16), ALL students will be running the mile for a recorded time. Each student completes a two lap course and then records their time.

In 6th grade classes, the students have been doing a great job with their first units. We will test on Friday with all of the 6th grade classes and then each class will rotate to their next teacher. Nyhlen's class will be starting Flag Football, Dodd's class will be starting Track and Field and Dvorak's class will be starting Field Hockey.

REMINDER: All 7th and 8th grade students received their P.E. field trip permission slips for the year. Students need to have these signed and returned by next TUESDAY, 9/22. If you need to print an extra one, they are all available online through our school webiste. Click on Lakeview, scroll down to Physical Education and then click on Permission Slips.

Good luck to the volleyball teams as they take on Burr Ridge tonight at home! Varsity games start at 4pm followed immediately by the Junior Varsity. Next week, both teams will be on the road. Monday, 9/21 the Spartans will take on Lisle and Thursday, 9/24 Lakeview will play Butler. Keep up the great work girls!

Lakeview Volleyball

Our Varsity and JV Volleyball teams have been doing an excellent job at practice in preparation for their first game. The Spartans will travel to Old Quarry on Thursday looking to start the season strong with a big victory on the road. Our first home game will be next week on Wednesday, September 16th against Burr Ridge. Come on out and show your support for both teams. All home games start at 4pm.

In P.E. class, the 7th and 8th grade students have been working hard in Track and Field. So far in Track, we have covered the 50 and 200 dash. We will be starting with relays at the end of this week where students will be in teams of four. The goal for each relay team is to improve on their overall time and try to improve their ranking. We will be starting with the 400 relay on Wednesday.

Sixth grade students have done a nice job in their first units here at Lakeview. In Field Hockey, we will be starting games today and tomorrow. Remember that all of the study guides are available online for our end of unit tests.

Welcome Back Spartans!

I would like to welcome everyone back to the 2009-2010 school year here at Lakeview! The summer went by too fast but I am definitely excited about being back in school and seeing all of the students again.

In P.E. class, this past week has been an introduction period for our 6th grade students. The first day of school we went over locker room rules and expectations, along with the daily routine in P.E. class. On Wednesday, all of the 6th grade students received their P.E. lockers and combinations. We practiced opening our lockers for most of the day on Thursday and then completed our first ten minute run.

The 7th and 8th grade classes started with fitness this week which included running, step aerobics and jump ropes. We also had some pretty intense games of snowball!

Next week, all students will be expected to be fully dressed in the proper P.E. uniform (Lakeview shirt and black shorts), and be ready to get into our new units. For 7th and 8th grade we will be starting track and field. In 6th grade, Ms. Nyhlen's class will be starting field hockey, Mr. Dvorak's class will be in track and field, and Mr. Dodd's class we be in flag football.

I hope that everyone has a wonderful school year!!!

Last week of school....

I can't believe the last week of the school year is already here! This week is very special for our 8th grade students as they all take time to look back and reflect with friends on their three years here at Lakeview. Today the 8th grade class went on their Odyssey boat trip downtown to Navy Pier. I am hoping that the weather cooperates and all of the rain holds off until tonight.

Tuesday and Wednesday the 8th grade students will have their final graduation practices and then Wednesday evening they will all officially be Lakeview alumni! The class of 2009 has been outstanding and I am very happy to have had the opportunity to teach all of the 8th graders this school year. Good luck to each of you as you enter high school next year! I know that you will be very successful in everything you do.

The 6th and 7th grade students will participate in their grade level activities on Thursday during the day and then Friday is officially the last day of the school year. I look forward to seeing some of you during summer school this June for the volleyball clinics that I will be teaching.

I hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing summer break and I will see you in the Fall!

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

This past week in P.E. class we started our softball and floor hockey units for the 7th and 8th grade classes. After this week, we will be starting our softball tournament where each team comes up with their own name and we tally up all of the wins and losses for the entire grade level to see who ends up with the best record for 7th and 8th grade.

Today in class we are running the mile for the second time in the Spring. The goal for each student is to stay within 30 seconds of their original time to receive the full credit for the run.

The sixth grade classes will be switching to their final units of the year tomorrow in class. Mr. Dvorak's class will be playing soccer, Mr. Dodd's class will be in badminton and Ms. Nyhlen's class will be playing softball.

Let's finish up this school year strong!!!

Friday, May 8, 2009

Final Units....

Coming up next week in P.E. class we will be testing in badminton and soccer on Tuesday and then moving into our final two units of the year with floor hockey and softball. Both the 7th and 8th grade students have done an outstanding job for the past three weeks in badminton. Congrats to Ryan K., Alvin W., Danielle C. and Stephanie H. on defeating me in our doubles badminton games! I definitely see some future talent for the DGS team!

In sixth grade, we are in our second section of units. Students are either participating in softball, soccer or badminton. The sixth grade students will finish out the school year with these units.

The softball team has one final home game left on Wednesday, May 13th against Jefferson. Come on out and support your Spartans as they try to end their regular season games with a victory! On Saturday, May 16th the Spartans will travel to the Lemont Park District for the Conference Tournament.

Fitness Testing

This past week in P.E. class we continued with our badminton and soccer units for 7th and 8th grade students. Yesterday in badminton we started our doubles tournament for each class period which we will finish up next week. If we have time at the end of the unit we will play a singles tournament.

On Tuesday (May 5th), next week all three grade levels will be participating in the timed mile run. Each student completed this run in the Fall and their time was recorded on a fitness sheet. For the Spring mile, each student should have the goal of improving their time by at least 10-15 seconds.

In 7th and 8th grade we will also be starting our fitness testing next week. Each student will receive a copy of their scores from the Fall so that they can compare them to their Spring scores and hopefully see a positive improvement.

The softball team is currently 2-1 with five more games to play this season. Next week we will be playing four games in a row so come on out and support your Spartans! Below is our remaining schedule for the season:

Monday, May 4th LV @ Westmont
Tuesday, May 5th LV @ Old Quarry
Wednesday, May 6th Westview @ LV
Thursday, May 7th Eisenhower @ LV

Wednesday, May 13th Jefferson @ LV

Saturday, May 16th Softball Tournament @ Lemont Park District (Times T.B.A.)

Have a great weekend!!!

Softball Make-Up Dates.....

Here are the new game dates for our rainout games this season:

Tuesday, May 5th @ OLD QUARRY

Thursday, May 7th @ LAKEVIEW (against Eisenhower)

Tuesday, April 21, 2009

This week in P.E. classes, we started out new units of badminton and soccer. Due to the weather outside, soccer has been working on their skills inside while badminton has just started to get underway with practice in serving and volleying. Our sixth grade students started fitness testing for the Spring on Monday in class. Each student should be able to compare their scores that they earned in the Fall and hopefully see a positive improvement in their efforts.

Last week, all the seventh and eighth grade students performed their jump rope and step routines. I was very impressed with the effort of each group! Overall, each step aerobics performance was evaluated on a 25 point rubric that included: fulfilling the 2 minute time requirement, using 3 sides of the step, facing 3 walls, incorporating eight or more moves and pairing all of those categories together with synchronization and rhythm.

The Lakeview Softball team has only played one game so far this season, however, it was a great game and the first win for the Spartans! Our game that was rained out against Old Quarry on the 14th was rescheduled for today (the 21st), however, with this weather forecast it may have to be postponed again. I will keep game updates here on my blog for the remainder of the season. Have a great week!

Spring Units...

This past week we finished up our pickleball and ping pong/bags units with all three grade levels. Students were tested yesterday over the units and will now be moving onto badminton and soccer. I am hoping that the weather begins to act more like it is Spring instead of Winter or we will be playing a lot of indoor line soccer this year!

Just a reminder, if you have P.E. early in the day please be prepared to go outside. All students should have an extra pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt that they can keep in their hall locker for the cooler days when we are outside playing soccer.

The softball team has had four practices now and I am definitely seeing a large improvement from last season. We have many returning players, as well as some new faces that will bring a lot of enthusiasm to our team. The first game in on Tuesday, away at Old Quarry. Go Spartans!!!

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Thank you to all of the girls who came out for softball tryouts the past two days. I know that yesterday was very chilly for everyone outside, but each girl gave it their best and I truly appreciate all of your effort!

Our softball season will begin over Spring Break with two practices at The Perfect Swing and then will continue when we get back from Spring Break. The first game will be on Tuesday, April 14th at Old Quarry.

In P.E. classes we are still continuing on with our pickleball, ping pong, baggo and whiffleball units. The week after Spring Break is a short one for the students so we will try to finish up these units during that week.

I hope everyone has a very relaxing and enjoyable break! Come back rested and ready to finish the school year out strong.

Friday, March 20, 2009

Softball Tryouts...

Next week, softball tryouts will be held for any 6th, 7th or 8th grade girl who is interested in playing on the softball team this school year. Tryouts will be on Tuesday and Wednesday each day from 3-5pm. Please make sure that you have a sports physical on file in the office! Also, be prepared to go outside, even if the weather isn't perfect. You need to have appropriate clothing (sweats, shorts, t-shirt), as well as your cleats in case the ground is still wet from all of the rain. I'm looking forward to a great season!

In P.E. this week, we continued with our pickleball tournaments. I have seen some great games going on in all three of my eighth grade classes and will be curious to see who the overall champ will be! Keep up the great work and have a wonderful weekend!

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

This school week is a short one for our students. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week we will be completing our fitness days and playing pickleball, ping pong and cornhole. On Thursday, since we have an early dismissal day we will be participating in an activity for our shortened class periods.

Parent teacher conferences will be held on Thursday night. I am looking forward to meeting with you to discuss the progress of your student in class.

Good luck to both the boys and girls Varsity basketball teams as they begin playoffs today!

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

Conclusion of Trimester 2....

This week concludes the second trimester of the school year already! Time has been flying by and I have to say that I am definitely happy that Spring is quickly approaching. Softball tryouts will be held on Tuesday, March 24th and Wednesday, March 25th from 3-5pm after school. In order to tryout, each student must have a sports physical on file in the office. Unfortunately, if you do not have a physical you cannot tryout, so make sure you get those taken care of if you haven't done so already!

In P.E., we are continuing right along with our pickleball, ping pong and cornhole units for the 7th and 8th grade students. We will begin playing pickleball games next week when our schedule returns back to normal without ISAT Testing. Our sixth grade students just started their skill work today with pickleball. I was very impressed with some of the serving I observed from our first time players. Keep up the great work!

Friday, February 27, 2009

ISAT Week....

Next week starting on Tuesday, all three grade levels will begin their ISAT testing. Make sure you all get 7-8 hours of sleep each night and eat a well balanced breakfast each morning! With the testing schedule, students may not have all of their classes each day but we will eventually catch up on everything we missed by the following week.

In P.E. class, we will be starting our new units of pickleball, ping pong and bean bags with the 7th and 8th grade students. Our sixth grade students will be starting whiffleball with Mr. Dodd, ping pong with Mr. Dvorak and pickleball with Ms. Nyhlen.

I hope you all have a great weekend and enjoy having off school on Monday for Casmir Pulaski Day!

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

This week in PE.......

Today in class, the 8th grade students took their cap and gown measurements. Even though it is only February, graduation day will be here before you know it! If you were absent on the day we took measurements don't panic, we will take care of it either Thursday or Friday of this week.

The sixth grade girls did a wonderful job yesterday in the IMC completing the Steroid Project. Each student watched a video and read an article on steroids and how people abuse them and then took two quizzes. Remember to turn in both the quiz and the word search to receive your points!

The sixth grade students will be testing on their current units Thursday and then will be switching into the final unit of the group, either floor hockey, weight lifting or basketball. Have a nice week everyone!!!

Friday, February 13, 2009

Steroid Project...

Next week the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students will be in the IMC working on the steroid project for our fitness unit. Students will learn about the dangers that are associated with steroids and the consequences that could result with steroid use.

Currently, in our weight lifting unit the girls have been doing an excellent job with trying new stations each week. We completed the bench press competition on Monday with each girl lifting 40lbs. as many times as possible. Kristy L. was the overall winner with a total of 41 reps. Nice job to everyone!

I hope that you all have a relaxing weekend and enjoy having Monday off in honor of President's Day.

Pack the Place...

Today after school the first PTP game will take place. All students that are attending the game will come to the old gym right after school and will take part in multiple activities. One of the highlights this year is the, "Pie-A-Teacher" contest. Tickets have been sold at lunch the past two days to see who will have the opportunity to "pie" their teacher. After these activities, the girls will be taking on Burr Ridge with a giant support section behind them that will be there to cheer the team onto victory! Tomorrow, the boys will face Westview in the second PTP game! Good luck Spartans!

This week in P.E. class we started our basketball games. All of my classes have been doing an outstanding job in the teamwork and communication areas of the game. We still need to work a little more on passing and ball control, however, I can already see an improvement from last year with the eighth grade girls.

Yesterday in 6th grade we tested and moved into our new units. My class went to basketball, Mr. Dvorak's class is with me in the floor hockey unit and Mr. Dodd's class is now in weight lifting.

Have a great week!

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Basketball and weight lifting....

This week we are starting the basketball and weight lifting units for the eighth grade students. Yesterday in class we went over the weight lifting study guide and started to discuss the new machines that we received over the summer. Over the course of the weight lifting unit, we will not only be using the new machines but will also be including free weights and working on multiple other strength training exercises including lunges, squats, reverse lunges, modified push-ups various abdominal exercises and aerobic fitness.

Good luck to the boys and girls basketball teams as they take on Cass tonight! Girls will be playing at Lakeview while the boys are away at Cass.

Don't forget that next week is Pack the Place! On Wednesday, February 4th the girls will take on Burr Ridge and then on Thursday the 5th the boys will face Westview. Come out and show your Spartan spirt while you cheer on the teams for a victory!

PE News....

This week in P.E., the 8th grade students have been reviewing for their ballroom dance this Friday. They will have one more review day on Thursday and then perform their skills on Friday.

Seventh grade students started their new units yesterday, with the girls going over the weight training study guides and the boys reviewing basketball. For these two units, the girls and boys will alternate each day between weights and basketball.

Sixth grade students started their new units yesterday as well and will rotate every two weeks. Ms. Nyhlen's class is beginning floor hockey, Mr. Dvorak is starting weight training and Mr. Dodd's class is beginning basketball.

Congratulations to both the Varsity basketball teams on their victories last night over Old Quarry! Go Spartans!

Rollerblading and new units.....

This week in P.E. class we were fortunate enough to have the rollerblades for a few extra days. All of the students have improved their skills over the course of the past two weeks. Whether they were at a beginning level or very confident on rollerblades, each student gave their full effort and seemed to enjoy this rollerblading unit. Nice job!

Next week, we will be starting our new units of basketball and weight lifting. In our weight lifting unit, the girls will focus on developing core body strength as well as using lighter weights with a higher amount of repetitions. In basketball, we will start out with basic ball control and shooting drills, then move into offense and defense and finally conclude with three on three and full court games.

I hope everyone has a relaxing and warm weekend indoors! Remember, if you do have to go outside in this weather wear a hat and bundle up! Hopefully Spring will come early this year. :)

Welcome Back!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Winter Break and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Even though many of us wanted to have school on the Friday before break, we ended up having a snow day which meant that the 8th grade students had to miss their ballroom dance. We do have a new date rescheduled for the ballroom dance. It will be on Friday, January 23rd from 1:15-2:56pm. All parents are welcome to come and take pictures of their children showing off their new dance moves!

In P.E. class this week, all three grade levels have been rollerblading. I have been very impressed with each class as they seem to progress each day and learn new tricks. So far we have covered braking, changing levels, cross over steps, balancing on one foot, using only one wheel on the heel or toe and partner skating. Tomorrow in class, the seventh and eighth grade students will be using their heart rate monitors while rollerblading to see if they can keep their heart rate in the target zone for fifteen minutes.

On Friday, all three grade levels will take their brake test. Each student will be expected to come to a complete stop on their own without using the wall or a friend to lean on :). Good luck to everyone!
