All parents are welcome to come and watch their child dance. Be sure to bring your camera too! :) Students have been learning how to do the rumba and swing up to this point in class. This week they will be introduced to the cha-cha and tango. Keep up the great work!

In 6th and 7th grade classes, students are still participating in volleyball, bowling and strength training (6th only). We will continue these units through the end of this week and then begin square dancing the last week before winter break.

Please be prepared for your cognitive test at the end of this week.

Happy Thanksgiving!

This is a quick week in PE classes. Both Monday and Tuesday will be spent bowling and playing volleyball. For our 8th grade classes, this will be the last week of each unit because we will be starting ballroom dancing on Monday the 28th. The other day of the week, our 8th graders will be completing one fitness day and participating in volleyball games.

For our 7th and 8th grade classes, we will continue with the current units of volleyball, bowling and strength training (6th grade only), until the week before winter break when we begin square dancing.

Tomorrow, the varsity volleyball team will take on the faculty and 8th grade football team members in the annual student/staff volleyball game.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving week!!!

All three grade levels will conclude their current units this Friday. Please be prepared for the cognitive test over your current unit. Study guides are all available online through the Lakeview website.

The next two units we will be participating in are bowling and volleyball. Please make sure if you didn't turn in your bowling permission slip, you get those turned into your PE teacher before our field trips. Seventh grade classes will be going on Thursday, November 17th and eighth grade classes will go on Friday, November 18th.

Have a great week and I look forward to seeing many of you at the Fall sports banquet this Thursday the 3rd at 6:00pm.

Are you ready for some football???

This week in PE classes, the 7th and 8th grade students started playing flag football games. The girls started to focus in on running set plays that include both passing and running patterns. Each class learned how to run a reverse in order to gain yards, as well as short yardage passing plays. I have been impressed with how well the games have been going. Keep up the great work!

Sixth grade classes are still in their final rotation of the first 3 units. In field hockey, we have been playing games inside and working on teamwork and passing skills. I am hoping to get outside next week for some actual "field" games. Please make sure that you bring warmer clothes as the temperature is going to be in the mid to upper 50's next week.

The Fall Sports banquet will be held on Thursday, November 3rd at 6pm. All FALL SPORT ATHLETES should have received a banquet form if you will be eating dinner with us. Please return these forms by November 1st.

Have a great weekend!

Congratulations to both the JV and Varsity Volleyball team members on their 10-0 regular season records!!! What a well played season girls! The varsity volleyball team will now play in the conference tournament on Saturday, October 22nd at Lakeview, game time is set for 10:45am. GO SPARTANS!!!

In P.E. classes, we wrapped up the track and field unit and will now begin our flag football unit. Please remember that you are allowed to bring sweats to wear outside in case the weather starts to become a little cooler. We will go outside if it is above 50 degrees and not raining.

In sixth grade classes, we will be finishing up our second rotation of units. All three classes will test this Friday over their current unit. Please review the study guides that are posted online under physical education on the Lakeview website.

Track and Field Wrap-Up

The 7th and 8th grade students will be outside all week concluding their track and field units. In the track portion, students are working on the 400 and 800 relays. The times so far after one day have been very impressive and I am betting that students will continue to improve as they gain the tactical knowledge to master the skill of a blind handoff. We will test on Friday with our 7th and 8th graders.

Sixth grade students are well under way with their second units of the school year. In field hockey, we were able to go outside for the first time and play games. Students realized how it is much more of a challenge to compete in a game outside on the grass compared to inside on the floor. Students in both classes recognized the areas of the game that they could improve on and then discussed what each team was doing well. I'm looking forward to watching some great games through the end of the week.

The Spartan volleyball teams both were victorious last night against Gower. The Varsity match went to 3 games (the first time all season), but the Spartans were able to come from behind (7-14) in the final game to win 16-14. One of the greatest comebacks I have ever seen! The JV team won in 2 games and continued their great play on the court. The teams conclude their regular season this week with games @Butler on Wednesday and home against Jefferson on Thursday. Come on out and support your Spartans!!!

Rain Rain Go Away!

This week in 7th and 8th grade P.E. classes, we have been focusing on our fitness skills as well as making up any missed fitness days. With all of the rain we have been receiving, it is very difficult to go outside for our track and field unit. On Thursday and Friday this week we should be able to get outside and finish up relays and the long jump/shot put. We will also be testing on our track and field unit at the conclusion of our activities.

The 6th grade classes have all completed their first units of the school year and made it through the first cognitive test. Many of the students did an excellent job on their first test and I'm sure will continue the great work on the next set of units. Students are currently participating in either field hockey, flag football or strength training.

The Spartan volleyball teams will play @ Cass this Thursday at 4pm. Go SPARTANS!!!!

Golf and 6th Grade Units....

This week in PE class all 7th and 8th grade students are participating in the golf unit. Students have been working on putting, iron shots and swing technique. On Thursday this week, the 7th grade students will be going on their field trip to Zigfield Troy golf course to practice at the driving range. It is a quick trip, but students gain practice participating at a real driving range. On Friday, all 8th grade students will be going on their field trip. Those students who play golf outside of school will be able to golf the course with a foursome of other 8th grade students. The remaining students will split their time between the driving range and mini golf course. All persmission slips are due on Wednesday the 21st.

Sixth grade students are still participating in their first units of the year: field hockey, strength training or flag football. We will be finishing up these units on Friday and having our cognitive test as well. Be sure to review your study guides before your test!

The volleyball teams play today, Tuesday the 20th at Lakeview and Thursday the 22nd at Westmont. Go Spartans!

Track and Field...

This week in PE classes for 7th and 8th grade students we will continue with our track and field unit. Each day, students alternate between track events and field events. Students will participate in track events that include the 50, 100, 200 and 400 yd. dashes as well as relay events of 400 and 800 yards. For field events, students are currently working on the high jump and will move on to shot put and long jump next.

Sixth grade students are continuing their current units of either field hockey, flag football or strength training.

I hope to see many of you tonight at the Lakeview Open House starting at 6:45pm. You will be able to follow the schedule that your child follows during the day and learn a little more detail about each class.

Congratulations to the Varsity and JV Volleyball teams on their victories over Eisenhower last Wednesday. This week we host Westview on Tuesday and travel to Lisle on Wednesday. GO SPARTANS!

Have a great week!

Welcome Back Spartans!!!

Welcome back to a new school year here at Lakeview Junior High! All PE classes went over the rules sheet in class last week and should have brought them home for a parent/guardian to sign. These sheets are due on Wednesday, August 31st and will be worth 10 points.

Today in class we are running our first mile of the Fall. All students are expected to put forth their best effort and encourage others. We will run the mile one more time in September to try and improve the time from your first mile.

All 6th grade students received their new lockers and combinations in the locker rooms. The 6th grade girls have done a GREAT job learning how to open their locks. In class, we introduced our basic warm up lines and also the game of snowball. Keep up the great work 6th grade students!

If anyone ever has any questions, the best way to get in contact with me is through email:
enyhlen@ccsd66.org

Girls volleyball tryouts are currently being held. The JV and Varsity teams will be decided at the end of tryouts today.

Fitness Testing

This week in P.E. class all three grade levels began fitness testing. Students are assessed on the following tests: pull ups, sit and reach, shuttle run, 1-minute sit-ups and the 1-mile run. We completed the first four tests and are now waiting for the weather to improve before we run the mile. When all five tests are complete, students will bring home their fitness sheets and have their parent/guardian review and sign them, then return the sheet to their teacher for 10 points.

In our weekly units, 7th and 8th grade students are currently playing soccer and badminton, while 6th grade students are playing soccer, softball and badminton.

The softball team is currently 2-2 on the season with four games to go. Good luck to the Spartans as they take on Cass this Friday at 4pm!

Pickleball unit....

Our pickleball unit is moving right along at all three grade levels. In 6th grade classes, we spent about a week on our basic skills and will begin playing games today. In 7th and 8th grade classes, we are focusing on strategy and how to work with our teammates. The doubles game in pickleball involves a lot of rules but can be very fun and competitive if you play at a quick speed. Some things to remember about pickleball:

1. Stay positioned at the back of the court when you are serving or receiving.
2. After the ball has bounced one time on each side of the net, you can approach the net and practice using your smash.
3. Work with your teammate to use different shots and techniques in certain situations.
4. Have fun!

I hope everyone has a great weekend! The weather should start to warm up a little bit, hopefully just in time for softball tryouts (March 23rd and 24th from 3-5pm).

2010 National Pickleball Championship

Check out this pickleball video from the National Pickleball Championship! These players are VERY advanced, but I bet some of you could handle some of these shots. In class this week, we will be working on various techniques and shots that we use during our pickleball game play. Students will be learning about 5-6 different skills that will be used when we begin our singles and doubles games.

Remember to keep a copy of the study guide or check it out online at the Lakeview Physical Education website. All players need to understand the rules before we can begin playing our games.

New Units...

Next week in P.E. class we will begin our new units of pickleball and ping pong/baggo. With ISAT testing next week, our class schedule will be a little mixed up, but each class will be reviewing the study guides and starting basic skill work in all units.

Trimester 2 ended on a stong note, with most students doing a great job on their unit tests. Some steps that you can take to improve your grade in P.E. class would be to:

1. Dress on a daily basis
2. Give your best effort each day
3. Be responsible and have your heart rate monitor strap in your P.E. locker each day
4. Demonstrate good sportsmanship
5. Review study guides to prepare for exams

I hope that everyone has a great weekend and is well rested for ISAT testing next week. Remember to eat a well balanced breakfast each day to give you energy throughout the morning!

Wrapping up Trimester 2!

This week we are still working on our current units. We will begin wrapping strength training and basketball up next week. Please be sure to begin reviewing your study guides for the cognitive tests you will be given. In strength training, don't forget about the F.I.T.T. Principle.

Frequency: how often you exercise
Intensity: how hard you work during exercise
Time: how long you exercise
Type: what type of activity you're doing

We are also concluding Trimester 2! The time is flying by and all make-up work needs to be completed by Wednesday next week.

If you didn't get to watch any of Super Bowl XLV..................the PACKERS WON!!!!!!! :)

Have a great week!

Super Bowl Heart Rate Run Opportunity...

Due by Tuesday during class:

1. Name 5 Packers players (first and last name)

2. Tell me what position they play

3. Name one thing they do (a play) during the Super Bowl

***If you turn this in to me by Tuesday during class you can run without your heart rate monitor for the fitness run next week.

Trimester 2...

We have 9-week progress reports coming out today for all students. That means that we only have 3 weeks left in Trimester 2! Please make sure that if you have any make-up runs to do that you finish those up next week.

All classes are still in their current units of either basketball and strength training (7th and 8th) or basketball, floor hockey and strength training (6th).

We will be testing with our 6th grade students next week as we have a couple days to make-up from the two snow days this week.

Be sure to tune in to the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 6th at 5:30pm. GO PACKERS!

New Units in 6th Grade...

This week we changed units in our 6th grade classes. Ms. Nyhlen's class went to basketball with Mr. Dodd. Mr. Dodd's class moved to strength training with Mr. Dvorak and Mr. Dvorak's class is now with Ms. Nyhlen playing floor hockey. All of the students have been doing a great job working on their floor hockey skills the past two days. Today we focused on accuracy and control when using the floor hockey sticks. We also went over basic offensive set-ups and where to position yourself on the floor during a game. We will begin playing games tomorrow!

In 7th and 8th grade classes, we are continuing right along with basketball and strength training. Basketball games have been very impressive to watch at both grade levels! There is a lot of positive communication, passing, shooting and defense occurring every game. Keep it up girls!

One last note that I am VERY excited about.....the GREEN BAY PACKERS defeated the Chicago Bears in the NFC Championship game and have moved on to play Pittsburgh in the Super Bowl in Dallas on Sunday, February 6th. The last time the Packers won the Super Bowl, I was in 8th grade! GO PACK GO!!!

Thursday, January 20, 2011

This week we are continuing right along with our units of basketball and strength training. Basketball games will start today with half court and we will move into full court games next week.

In sixth grade, my classes are playing floor hockey games. All of the students have been doing an excellent job in our games! We have been working on passing to our teammates, defensive sets and good sportsmanship.

Get ready for some amazing football this weekend! The GREEN BAY PACKERS will take on the Chicago Bears at Soldier field on Sunday at 2pm. This hasn't happened in the playoffs since 1941!!! I am sure it will be an amazing game with the Packers coming away with a win in the end. :)

Basketball and Strength Training...

This week we began our two new units for the next three to four weeks. Our strength training unit kicked off with an introduction to the new equipment in our weight room on the stage. We added a shoulder press and ab machine, two bicep machines and a gravitron 2000. All of the students learned proper technique and form at each of the new pieces of equipment, as well as a review of our older ones.

We will be alternating strength training with our basketball unit. In basketball we have just begun with basic ball handling and passing skills. Next week, we will move onto shooting form, defensive set-ups and offesive sets. We will then begin playing short court games and eventually move into full court games.

I hope everyone has a wonderul long weekend!! Go PACKERS!!!!!!!!!

Rollerblading...

WELCOME BACK and a Happy New Year to everyone!!!

This week in class, all three grade levels are participating in the rollerblading unit. We started yesterday and everyone has been doing a great job! Students are focusing on coming to complete stops by using their brake only. We are also beginning balancing on one foot, changing levels, cross-over steps and heel and toe moves.

On Friday, all three levels will take their "brake test". Students will be expected to come to a complete stop on a line by using their rollerblade brakes.

After rollerblading we will begin our basketball and strength training units.
