New Rotation Starting Monday

We all made it through the first rotation of the new PE/Health classes.  Starting on Monday, September 17th, we will move into our second rotation.  Mr. Dvorak's class will now move to Ms. Nyhlen's class for PE.  Ms. Nyhlen's class will move to Ms. Stankiewicz for Health, and Ms. Stankiewiczs' class will move to Mr. Dvorak for PE.  So, if you are going to Health class, you do not need your PE uniform for the next two weeks, however, you do need a folder or binder for Health class.  If you are moving to Dvorak or Nyhlen, you still need your uniform on Monday.

Fall Sports Pictures will be held on Friday, September 21st.  All Fall athletes should have received a picture form on Friday at practice.  Please make sure you fill this out and return it to your coach during the week, or bring it on Friday the 21st for pictures.

Welcome Back Spartans!

Welcome back to the 2012-2013 school year!  We all made it through the first week of school and I want to thank all of the students for demonstrating such great behavior the first week.  I would also like to congratulate all of our 6th grade students for making the transition from Prairieview to Lakeview!

In PE classes, all of my 6th grade students have done an amazing job learning their new locker combinations and how to open their PE lockers.  This 6th grade class has been the first to have the locker room procedures down pat in one week.  Keep up the great work!

All 6th, 7th and 8th grade students completed the Fall Fitness Testing this first week (6th grade-no mile run) of classes.  Starting on Tuesday, we will begin the rotation of PE/Health every two weeks.  To clarify this for anyone that is still confused........if you have Nyhlen on your schedule for PE/Health, you will start with Ms. Nyhlen for two weeks of PE.  If you have Dvorak, you will start with Mr. Dvorak for two weeks of PE.  If you have Conley, you will start with Ms. Stankiewicz (Mrs. Conley's maternity leave sub), for two weeks of Health.  The rotation will then go:  Nyhlen to Stankiewicz, Stankiewicz to Dvorak, Dvorak to Nyhlen and REPEAT every two weeks from there.

Please contact any of us if you have questions about the new rotation.  This is a new schedule for all of us (students and teachers), but I'm positive everyone will understand it after a full rotation between all three classes.

ATHLETICS:  Thank you to all of the girls that came out for JV and Varsity Volleyball tryouts.  It was an extremely difficult tryout, with about 50-55 girls trying out this season.  It is the most difficult part for me as a coach, because each girl that I evaluated showed such positive attitude and potential.  Unfortunately, we can only have a certain amount of girls on each team per season.  I would like to congratulate those girls that made JV and Varsity volleyball this season.

Cross country practices started on Wednesday with a very large group of students coming out for the first practice of the season.  Best of luck Spartan runners!

Football tryouts also took place last Thursday and Friday.  I know Mr. Dvorak will have a great group of players this season and I'm looking forward to watching the Spartans play!

Football cheerleading tryouts will be held this upcoming week, with a cheer clinic on Tuesday, Spet. 4th and tryouts on Wednesday, Sept. 5th.  Best of luck to all the girls!

Softball Unit

This week in 7th and 8th grade classes, all students are participating in the annual softball tournament.  Each team competes against one another in a softball game over the course of two days.  At the end of day 2, whichever team is ahead gets the win.  We have had some pretty close games up to date, with multiple periods ending their games with a mark in the tie column.  Keep up the great work!

Sixth grade classes are in their second rotation of the last three units.  In badminton, we will continue to work on serving and various types of shots and strategies.  At the end of this week, we will begin playing doubles games.

Congratulations to the girls softball team on their 2nd place season finish, as well as their 2nd place conference tournament finish.  The Spartans played great softball all season and finished with an overall record of 7-1-1.  Way to go Spartans!!!

Conclusion of units....

This week in PE classes we are finishing up our badminton and soccer units with the 7th and 8th grade students.  We will be testing on Thursday and then running the mile on Friday to wrap up the week.  Please make sure that you review your study guides as each question is worth two points.

In 6th grade classes, we are continuing along with our final rotation of units.  With only about 4 weeks left of school, the 6th grade students are continuing to do an excellent job in each unit.  I think they are ready to move on to 7th grade!

Congratulations to the softball team as they prepare for their final regular season game this Wednesday vs. Westmont @ Lakeview.  As of today their record is 4-1-1.  The girls will play in the conference tournament on Saturday, May 12th at Lemont Park District.  Go Spartans!

Fitness Testing

This week we began fitness testing with our 6th grade students.  Every student will complete the sit and reach, one minute sit ups, shuttle run, pull ups and timed mile run.  At the conclusion of these tests each student should bring home their fitness score sheet for their parents to sign and return to their PE teacher.  Right now, with the weather this week, we are looking to run the mile on Thursday.

The ultimate goal of every student should be to improve all of the scores from the Fall round of fitness testing.

In our 7th and 8th grade classes, students are continuing along with their badminton tournament.  There have been a lot of great games up to date and I look forward to seeing the conclusion of the games.  In sixth grade classes, students will begin their final rotation of three units.  Ms. Nyhlen's class will begin badminton, Mr. Dodd's class will begin softball and Mr. Dvorak's class will begin soccer.

Badminton and Soccer Units

All 7th and 8th grade classes are continuing along with their badminton and soccer units. In badminton, Ms. Stankiewicz is teaching 7th and 8th grade students about different techniques and shots in the game of badminton. Students started out working on underhand and backhand serves and then progressed into using the drive, smash and clear shots. Most classes will participate in doubles play, while working on rotation and scoring. Towards the end of this week, we will begin a double elimination, doubles tournament.

Sixth grade classes just finished up their second rotation of units on Friday. Today, all classes will move into their final units of either pickleball, whiffleball or ping pong. After these units wrap up, we will start our three final units of the school year which include badminton, soccer and softball. Have a great week everyone!

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a very relaxing and fun spring break! As we get back into the swing of things here at Lakeview, I wanted to take this time to welcome our student teacher for Physical Education. Jen Stankiewicz will be here with us at Lakeview from the beginning of April until May 18th. I'll let her introduce herself below:

Hello, Lakeview! I'm excited to work with everyone over the next seven weeks. For the last eight weeks I was student teaching in Clarendon Hills at one of their elementary schools, so I'm excited for the changes I'll see at the junior high level. I'm from Downers Grove and, yes, went to DGS, so I am familiar with the area and everything in it. After the students finish up their pickleball and ping pong/bags units, I will be teaching them about badminton.
~Ms. Stankiewicz

Ms. Stankiewicz has observed at Lakeview over the past year and a half, so we definitely all welcome her back and wish her the best of luck during and after student teaching!

This week in PE classes the 7th and 8th grade students will be finishing up their pickleball and ping pong/bags units. We will be testing on Thursday this week. Please review your study guides and have a wonderful week!

Rollerblading in PE

We have started our rollerblading unit in all PE classes! Safety equipment is available for any student that would like to use it. We have helmets, knee pads, elbow pads and wrist guards.

Each class will begin the unit with learning the basics of safety, starting, stopping and backwards skating. As the unit progresses, students will work on changing levels, cross-over steps, skating on one foot for a short distance and finally end with a skills course.

We will be having a brake test at the end of the unit where students will be expected to stop on cue using their brake. T-stops and turn stops will not be acceptable.

Have a great weekend!

ISAT Week....

This week in PE classes will be a little less consistent due to ISAT testing and the three day week. Seventh and eighth grade will stay on the same rotation, flipping between pickleball and ping pong/bags, however, students may only have each unit one time this week.

In sixth grade we will stay with our same units through the end of this week and then test and switch next week. The sixth grade students have been doing an excellent job in pickleball so far! I am very impressed with the level of play by everyone.

Parent-teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, March 8th this week.

Have a great week everyone!

New Unit Rotation in 6th Grade...

This week we changed our units in 6th grade PE classes. Nyhlen's class is now with Mr. Dodd in basketball, Mr. Dodd's class is with Mr. Dvorak in strength training and Mr. Dvorak's class is with Ms. Nyhlen in floor hockey. Students in floor hockey worked on the basics of passing and accuracy with their teammates and started playing half court games on Friday. Excellent play so far by all students and I look forward to watching some competitive games next week.

In 7th and 8th grade, students are still alternating between basketball and strength training. The girls have done a wonderful job in the strength training unit and continue to see self-improvements in the amount of sets and reps that they can do. Keep up the great work girls!

Have a great weekend everyone and be sure to watch what should be a very good Super Bowl this Sunday.
