Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Basketball team on an outstanding season!!! The girls will play for the Conference Championship against Old Quarry on Friday, February 26 @ Jefferson Junior High, 6pm. Good luck and play tough!

This past week in P.E. class we began our Pickleball and Ping Pong/Bags units. All three grade levels have been doing a nice job with pickleball. We will continue these same units going into ISAT week (March 2nd-5th).

Study up for your tests!

This week we will be concluding our units in Strength Training, Basketball and Floor Hockey (6th gr. only). All students received study guides at the beginning of the unit so make sure that you review them before we test. Sixth grade students will test on Friday and 7th and 8th grade will have their tests on Monday. Next up: Pickleball, Ping Pong and Baggo!

Thank you to everyone who sold candy for our Athletic Fundraiser. We don't have the totals in yet, however its seems to have been a very successful fundraiser, which couldn't have been done without your continued support.

Good luck to both the basketball teams as they conclude their regular season today against Jefferson. The girls will play at home while the boys travel to Jefferson. Go Spartans!

Candy Fundraiser...

All of the students who chose to take a box of chocolate bars for our fundraiser should be well on their way to selling the 4o bars. Please make sure that you have all of your money turned in for our Athletic Fundraiser by next Tuesday, February 16th. We are accepting the envelopes as soon as you finish selling your box. You can turn them in to either Mr. Dvorak, Mr. Dodd, or Ms. Nyhlen.

This week in P.E. classes we are still continuing with the Basketball and Strength Training units, as well as Floor Hockey for 6th grade only. Students have really been doing a great job over the past few weeks of these units and should be well prepared to take their written test at the end of next week.

On Friday, the sixth grade students will have their Valentine's Day Party during P.E. class. We will be playing a game in each of the gyms and then have snacks in the lobby. Have a great weekend and a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Steroid Project...

Over the past week, all students were in the IMC for one day working on the Steroid Project. This project coincides with our Strength Training unit and enables students to recognize the potential dangers of using steroids. Each student completed a Brain Pop quiz on steroids and then read an in depth article about some of the serious side effects that could arise from steroid use.

At the conclusion of the article, students completed a 10 question quiz and a word search on steroids. The last day to turn these items in is Wednesday, February 3rd.

The Bench Press Competition has started for all of my classes. All of the girls have done a great job in giving their best effort. Our two leaders so far: Antoinette Z. (7th grade), 41 reps. @ 40lbs. and Amanda F. (8th grade), 35 reps. @ 40lbs. Congratulations!

Good luck to the Varsity basketball teams as they prepare for PACK THE PLACE this Wednesday (girls against Butler), and Thursday (boys against Burr Ridge). GO SPARTANS!

Great Basketball!

The 7th and 8th grade classes are moving right along with their basketball and strength training units. This week during basketball my 8th grade classes will be focusing on communication with their teammates and a couple different types of passing plays. All three of my 8th grade classes have been playing some very competitive games with everyone playing a part. Keep up the awesome work girls!

Sixth grade classes will be switching into new units today. Nyhlen's class will go into basketball, Dodd's class will move into the strength training unit and Dvorak's class will start floor hockey. I'm looking forward to having a new set of faces again for the next two weeks.

Good luck to both basketball teams this week as they have a full week: Monday 1/25 vs. Eisenhower, Wednesday 1/27 vs. Old Quarry and Friday 1/29 vs. Jefferson. Go Spartans!

Stay FITT

This week in strength training classes, my 7th and 8th grade girls learned about the FITT Principle.

FITT = Frequency, Intensity, Type, Time

Each class went through examples of how this principle can apply to our strength training unit, as well as the other units and activities we participate in during P.E. You can use the four categories in both a strength training routine or in a cardiovascular program, such as the use of heart rate monitors. Make sure you know what FITT stands for and a couple examples of each key word.

In sixth grade, my class has been doing a great job in their floor hockey unit. We are continuing game play this week and working on our communication and passing with teammates. Keep up the great work!

Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Basketball team on their victory over Westmont last night! Good luck to both Varsity teams as they take on Cass this Thursday....boys are home while the girls travel to Cass.

New Units...

Happy Monday!!!

We will be rollerblading for at least one more day, as Lifetime hasn't picked the blades up. Have fun!

This week we will begin our Basketball and Strength Training units in 7th and 8th grade P.E. classes. This is a great time of year in our program, as students are not only working on teamwork and communication in basketball, but also developing their muscular strength, endurance and flexibility in the strength training section. Each day, the boys and girls will switch off units. (Example: M,W,F girls would participate in basketball and T,R would be strength training days).

In sixth grade classes, students will begin their new section of units as well. Mr. Dodd's class will be in basektball, Mr. Dvorak will be in strength training and Ms. Nyhlen will be starting floor hockey.

Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Basketball team on their victory over Westivew Hills on Saturday in the annual Westmont Rotary Tournament. What a well played game!!!
