Basketball and weight lifting....

This week we are starting the basketball and weight lifting units for the eighth grade students. Yesterday in class we went over the weight lifting study guide and started to discuss the new machines that we received over the summer. Over the course of the weight lifting unit, we will not only be using the new machines but will also be including free weights and working on multiple other strength training exercises including lunges, squats, reverse lunges, modified push-ups various abdominal exercises and aerobic fitness.

Good luck to the boys and girls basketball teams as they take on Cass tonight! Girls will be playing at Lakeview while the boys are away at Cass.

Don't forget that next week is Pack the Place! On Wednesday, February 4th the girls will take on Burr Ridge and then on Thursday the 5th the boys will face Westview. Come out and show your Spartan spirt while you cheer on the teams for a victory!

PE News....

This week in P.E., the 8th grade students have been reviewing for their ballroom dance this Friday. They will have one more review day on Thursday and then perform their skills on Friday.

Seventh grade students started their new units yesterday, with the girls going over the weight training study guides and the boys reviewing basketball. For these two units, the girls and boys will alternate each day between weights and basketball.

Sixth grade students started their new units yesterday as well and will rotate every two weeks. Ms. Nyhlen's class is beginning floor hockey, Mr. Dvorak is starting weight training and Mr. Dodd's class is beginning basketball.

Congratulations to both the Varsity basketball teams on their victories last night over Old Quarry! Go Spartans!

Rollerblading and new units.....

This week in P.E. class we were fortunate enough to have the rollerblades for a few extra days. All of the students have improved their skills over the course of the past two weeks. Whether they were at a beginning level or very confident on rollerblades, each student gave their full effort and seemed to enjoy this rollerblading unit. Nice job!

Next week, we will be starting our new units of basketball and weight lifting. In our weight lifting unit, the girls will focus on developing core body strength as well as using lighter weights with a higher amount of repetitions. In basketball, we will start out with basic ball control and shooting drills, then move into offense and defense and finally conclude with three on three and full court games.

I hope everyone has a relaxing and warm weekend indoors! Remember, if you do have to go outside in this weather wear a hat and bundle up! Hopefully Spring will come early this year. :)

Welcome Back!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Winter Break and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Even though many of us wanted to have school on the Friday before break, we ended up having a snow day which meant that the 8th grade students had to miss their ballroom dance. We do have a new date rescheduled for the ballroom dance. It will be on Friday, January 23rd from 1:15-2:56pm. All parents are welcome to come and take pictures of their children showing off their new dance moves!

In P.E. class this week, all three grade levels have been rollerblading. I have been very impressed with each class as they seem to progress each day and learn new tricks. So far we have covered braking, changing levels, cross over steps, balancing on one foot, using only one wheel on the heel or toe and partner skating. Tomorrow in class, the seventh and eighth grade students will be using their heart rate monitors while rollerblading to see if they can keep their heart rate in the target zone for fifteen minutes.

On Friday, all three grade levels will take their brake test. Each student will be expected to come to a complete stop on their own without using the wall or a friend to lean on :). Good luck to everyone!
