Skills and Written Test...

The sixth and seventh grade students have been doing a wonderful job in their square dancing unit. As we progress onto some more advanced dances this week, students have been focusing in and working on their listening skills.

On Thursday (12/16) this week, both 7th and 8th grade students will take their skills test for square dancing. We assess students based on if they are able to perform the correct moves, in the correct direction when a song is played. On Friday, all students will take their written test over square dancing. The study guide is available on the Lakeview website, so please review this before Friday.

Eighth grade students will also take their ballroom dance written test on Friday. It will cover the basic knowledge of calls and steps for the rumba, swing, cha-cha and tango. Students must also know the proper etiquette while ballroom dancing.

Have a wonderful winter break!

Ballroom and Square Dancing...

All three grade levels are currently in their dance units. For our sixth and seventh grade students we are beginning our square dance unit. Students learn the basic moves in sixth grade and apply them to basic and moderate level square dances, while our seventh grade classes review the basics and then begin with moderate level and move into advanced square dances. Both 6th and 7th grade classes will also perform circle and line dances.

In eighth grade P.E. classes we are moving right along with our ballroom dancing unit. Each class has performed moves in the rumba, swing and cha-cha within the first week and a half. Today we will have a review day and our one fitness day of the week.

The ballroom dance will be held on Friday, December 17th in the afternoon. All parents are welcome to come and are allowed to bring your camera too! The PTO provides snacks and refreshments for the kids at the dance.

Steroid Project...

Over the past week, all students were in the IMC for one day working on the Steroid Project. This project coincides with our Strength Training unit and enables students to recognize the potential dangers of using steroids. Each student completed a Brain Pop quiz on steroids and then read an in depth article about some of the serious side effects that could arise from steroid use.

At the conclusion of the article, students completed a 10 question quiz and a word search on steroids. The last day to turn these items in is Wednesday, February 3rd.

The Bench Press Competition has started for all of my classes. All of the girls have done a great job in giving their best effort. Our two leaders so far: Antoinette Z. (7th grade), 41 reps. @ 40lbs. and Amanda F. (8th grade), 35 reps. @ 40lbs. Congratulations!

Stay FITT

This week in strength training classes, my 7th and 8th grade girls learned about the FITT Principle.

FITT = Frequency, Intensity, Type, Time

Each class went through examples of how this principle can apply to our strength training unit, as well as the other units and activities we participate in during P.E. You can use the four categories in both a strength training routine or in a cardiovascular program, such as the use of heart rate monitors. Make sure you know what FITT stands for and a couple examples of each key word.

In sixth grade, my class has been doing a great job in their floor hockey unit. We are continuing game play this week and working on our communication and passing with teammates. Keep up the great work!

Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Basketball team on their victory over Westmont last night! Good luck to both Varsity teams as they take on Cass this Thursday....boys are home while the girls travel to Cass.

New Units...

Happy Monday!!!

We will be rollerblading for at least one more day, as Lifetime hasn't picked the blades up. Have fun!

This week we will begin our Basketball and Strength Training units in 7th and 8th grade P.E. classes. This is a great time of year in our program, as students are not only working on teamwork and communication in basketball, but also developing their muscular strength, endurance and flexibility in the strength training section. Each day, the boys and girls will switch off units. (Example: M,W,F girls would participate in basketball and T,R would be strength training days).

In sixth grade classes, students will begin their new section of units as well. Mr. Dodd's class will be in basektball, Mr. Dvorak will be in strength training and Ms. Nyhlen will be starting floor hockey.

Congratulations to the Varsity Girls Basketball team on their victory over Westivew Hills on Saturday in the annual Westmont Rotary Tournament. What a well played game!!!

Welcome Back!

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful winter break and a very happy new year!

This week in P.E. classes, all three grade levels will begin rollerblading. We will all start out learning and reviewing the basics of starting and stopping, as well as blading backwards. As we progress throughout the week, students will be working on cross-over steps, partner skating and varying the height levevls while rollerblading.

Safety equipment is available for any student to use at anytime. We have helmets, knee pads and elbow pads to provide some extra support and safety in case of a fall. So far, all of the students have been doing an outstanding job!

We will have our brake test towards the end of the week. Each student will have to demonstrate their ability to stop while rollerblading. We do this not only to test the students, but to make sure they are safe and have the basic knowledge of this activity outside of school.

GO PACKERS!!! They take on the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday in the Wild Card playoff game.
