New Units for 6th Grade...
This week we will begin our final rotation of units for our 6th grade classes. Ms. Nyhlen's class will begin Badminton, Mr. Dvorak's class will start Soccer and Mr. Dodd's class will begin Softball. All three classes will be going over study guides in class and learning the basics to each game. Please remember to bring warmer clothes for soccer and softball. With this crazy April weather, it still is a little chilly to be outside in just your PE uniform. The softball team will begin a 4 game homestand starting tomorrow (4/19), against Eisenhower at 4pm, followed up with Burr Ridge on Wednesday 4/20, Jefferson on Tuesday 4/26 and Cass on Wednesday 4/27. Come on out and support your Spartans!

Tourney Time!
In our pickleball unit we will begin our singles and doubles tournaments today. All students get to choose who they will be teamed up with and then the double elimination style bracket does the rest to decide which teams will be playing each other. At the end of each tournament the champions from both sides of the bracket will face off in a final round game to 11.
Our sixth grade students are finishing up their first rotation of units today and will be switching units tomorrow. The classes will rotate as follows:
Nyhlen (pickleball) -----> Dodd (whiffleball)
Dodd (whiffleball) -----> Dvorak (ping pong)
Dvorak (ping pong) -----> Nyhlen (pickleball)
Have a great rest of the week and a wonderful St. Patrick's Day!!!

Pickleball unit....
Our pickleball unit is moving right along at all three grade levels. In 6th grade classes, we spent about a week on our basic skills and will begin playing games today. In 7th and 8th grade classes, we are focusing on strategy and how to work with our teammates. The doubles game in pickleball involves a lot of rules but can be very fun and competitive if you play at a quick speed. Some things to remember about pickleball:
1. Stay positioned at the back of the court when you are serving or receiving.
2. After the ball has bounced one time on each side of the net, you can approach the net and practice using your smash.
3. Work with your teammate to use different shots and techniques in certain situations.
4. Have fun!
I hope everyone has a great weekend! The weather should start to warm up a little bit, hopefully just in time for softball tryouts (March 23rd and 24th from 3-5pm).

2010 National Pickleball Championship
Check out this pickleball video from the National Pickleball Championship! These players are VERY advanced, but I bet some of you could handle some of these shots. In class this week, we will be working on various techniques and shots that we use during our pickleball game play. Students will be learning about 5-6 different skills that will be used when we begin our singles and doubles games.
Remember to keep a copy of the study guide or check it out online at the Lakeview Physical Education website. All players need to understand the rules before we can begin playing our games.

New Units...
Next week in P.E. class we will begin our new units of pickleball and ping pong/baggo. With ISAT testing next week, our class schedule will be a little mixed up, but each class will be reviewing the study guides and starting basic skill work in all units.
Trimester 2 ended on a stong note, with most students doing a great job on their unit tests. Some steps that you can take to improve your grade in P.E. class would be to:
1. Dress on a daily basis
2. Give your best effort each day
3. Be responsible and have your heart rate monitor strap in your P.E. locker each day
4. Demonstrate good sportsmanship
5. Review study guides to prepare for exams
I hope that everyone has a great weekend and is well rested for ISAT testing next week. Remember to eat a well balanced breakfast each day to give you energy throughout the morning!
